For homeowners who want to handle their own maintenance
Not every garage door job requires a service call. If you are comfortable with basic home maintenance and your repair is one that does not involve spring tension or cable adjustment, we stock common garage door hardware and parts you can pick up at the showroom.
Come by 3785 Forest Inn Road in Palmerton, describe what you need, and Ryan or a member of the team will help you identify the right part.
What we typically carry
Rollers Rollers wear out before most other hardware on a residential door. The nylon-wheel rollers on standard doors typically last five to seven years under normal use; steel rollers last longer. If your door has become noisy or rough in its travel, worn rollers are the first thing to check. We stock common roller sizes for standard residential tracks.
Hinges Sectional door hinges connect the panels to each other and hold the rollers to the door. They crack and fatigue over time, particularly on doors that have been in service for many years. Hinges are numbered by section position — a number-1 hinge is different from a number-3. Bring the old hinge in if you are not sure which you need.
Cables Lift cables and safety cables. Safety cables thread through extension springs and are required on properly installed extension spring systems — they retain the spring if it breaks. If a safety cable is frayed, missing, or has come off the anchor, it should be replaced. Note: if you are replacing cables on a torsion spring system, you are dealing with tension and this is generally not a DIY repair.
Bottom brackets The hardware that connects the lift cable to the bottom corner of the door panel. These are under load when the door operates and should not be improvised. If a bottom bracket is cracked or bent, replace it with the correct part.
Springs (extension only, for informed DIYers) We stock common extension spring sizes for homeowners who are familiar with the repair and understand the safety requirements. Extension springs are less dangerous to replace than torsion springs because they are not wound under torque in the same way, but they are still under load. If you are not sure whether your system uses extension or torsion springs, or if you have any uncertainty about the repair, call us.
Torsion spring replacement requires proper winding tools and experience — we do not sell torsion springs for DIY installation. Call (610) 826-2400 and let Ryan handle it.
Weather seal and bottom seal The rubber seal at the bottom of the door and the weather stripping on the sides and top prevent drafts and water intrusion. These wear out with age and contact. Replacing the bottom seal is a straightforward DIY job on most doors — cut to length, slide into the retainer channel, secure. We stock bottom seal material in standard widths.
Lubrication The correct lubricant for garage door components is not WD-40 (a penetrating oil and cleaner, not a long-term lubricant). We carry garage door-specific lubricant for springs, hinges, rollers, and tracks. Proper lubrication is the simplest and cheapest thing you can do to extend the life of your door hardware and reduce noise.
Locks and T-handles Exterior T-handle locks and interior slide locks for manually operated doors or as secondary security on automatic doors.
When to call instead of DIY
Some garage door repairs look approachable but involve components under significant stored energy. If your repair involves any of the following, call a professional:
- Torsion springs (the horizontal spring above the door)
- Bottom fixtures and cables on torsion spring systems (these are under tension even when the door is closed)
- An off-track door (the door needs to come off the track and be inspected before going back on)
- Any situation where the door feels heavy or unbalanced manually
Ryan will tell you honestly if a repair is one you can handle yourself with the right part, or whether the job requires a service call. He is not going to insist on a service call for a hinge replacement or a bottom seal swap.
Stop by or call ahead
The showroom is at 3785 Forest Inn Road in Palmerton. Call ahead at (610) 826-2400 to confirm we have the part you need in stock — not everything is on the shelf at all times, and some hardware may need to be ordered.
